LEGO® BIOMASS!!
Who knew you could have so much FUN with rotting garbage! Compost heaps will give off low level heat in the process of rotting. Since we are producing outrageous amounts of garbage that we are constantly wondering what to do with ( including dumping it in the ocean and shipping to Idaho )... it would be a wonderful thing to find productive and constructive solutions such as producing ENERGY! As an experiment, the students of PCS ( during our summer energy camp ) decided to run pnuematic tubing filled with water through a container built of bricks. Old spinach was used as the composting material in addition to some soil ( as to introduce microbiotic life ). The Aculab was hooked up to record any temperature differences.
Our final results indicated that there was a slight rise in temperature, although our sample was small and we measured for only seven days.
